Oil Classification

There are different ways to classify motor oils:

  • in accordance with the properties of viscosity and fluidity;

  • in accordance with general performance

  • in accordance quality level (enables to choose a grade of oil that matches the age of the car and the type of engine).

The Association of European Automobile Manufacturers ACEA (Association des Constructeurs Europeens de L'Automobile) represents the interests of 15 European manufacturers of car, trucks and buses at EU level. This classification establishes a new, more stringent in comparison with CCMC, European classification of motor oils according to performance of the oil.
ACEA was established in Europe in 1991 with a head office in Brussels comprising the Secretary General and the Secretariat. In 1995 and 2004, ACEA opened additional offices in Tokyo and Beijing.

The Board of Directors consists of top managers of car manufacturers, members of the association, such as BMW GROUP, PORSCHE AG, DAF TRUCKS NV, PSA PEUGEOT CITROËN, DAIMLER AG, RENAULT SA, FIAT SpA, SCANIA AB, FORD OF EUROPE GmbH, TOYOTA MOTOR EUROPE , GENERAL MOTORS EUROPE AG, VOLKSWAGEN AG, JAGUAR LAND ROVER, AB VOLVO, MAN NUTZFAHRZEUGE AG.

The current and previous ILSAC standards are listed here. Vehicle owners should refer to their owner's manuals before consulting these charts. Oils may have more than one performance level.

For automotive gasoline engines, the latest ILSAC standard includes the performance properties of each earlier category and can be used to service older engines where earlier category oils were recommended.
